Facts About Sedation Dentistry

  1. It works.
  2. It is safe.
  3. Work requiring several appointments can be done in 1 visit!
  4. People who have difficulty getting numb have no problem when relaxed.
  5. It is safely used to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatments that require long visits.

How does IV Sedation (Deep Sedation) work?

IV Sedation is the most preferred and predictable method of sedation where deep sedation is desired. Profound state of relaxation and amnesia is achieved during IV sedation.

Before Dr. Abenaim begins, an I.V. (intravenous drip) will be introduced into a vein on your arm or hand. You will be maintained in a comfortable, dazed, painless, extremely relaxed yet conscious state, while Dr. Abenaim works on your teeth. The "drip" contains an anti-anxiety medication and is adjusted so that you are awake just enough to follow directions. Your vital signs (breathing, heart rate etc...) are monitored the entire time you are under. When you wake up after the work is done, you are a little "dazed" and remember nothing. When you are fully awake, you need someone to help you out to the vehicle, and drive you home.

IV sedation does not provide pain relief, so an injection of local anesthetic will also be administered in conjunction with this method of dental sedation.

How does Nitrous Oxide work?

A small mask will be placed over the patient's nose and adjusted so that the patient is comfortable. At this time, the patient will be breathing 100% oxygen.

Once the patient is comfortable breathing oxygen, the dentist gradually will introduce nitrous oxide. When the patient is feeling completely relaxed, the procedure can begin.
At the conclusion of the sedation dentistry treatment, the patient will once again receive 100% oxygen (for a minimum of three to five minutes). At the end of this time, the person should feel absolutely back to normal.

How does Oral Sedation work?

You are given a pill to take one hour prior to your dental appointment. A companion will accompany you to the office. When you arrive, you will be very drowsy. You will relax into a very comfortable chair, covered with a thick, warm, cozy blanket. Your vital signs will be monitored. After you are comfortable, our experienced clinical team will take care of your dental needs. When your treatment is completed your companion will return you home to finish your relaxing sleep.
